Godavari Pushkaralu: Know About What is Pushkaram?
An event which arrives once in twelve years based on the transit of Jupiter (Brihaspathi) in the zodiac especially in the case a river is said to be a Pushkara or Pushkaram. Thus Godavari Pushkara or Pushkaram is an auspicious festival and celebration of river Godavari which comes once in 12 years while this year's Godavari Pushkaralu is speculated to be a Maha Pushkara which comes once in 144 years complete cycle.
The word Pushkara or Pushkar is derived from Sanskrit word Push (Pushti) which means nourishment and 'Kara' means one who does it. In this context Godavari Pushkara or Pushkaralu or any rivers, Pushskara means the one who energizes the rivers and provides spiritual purification.
Who is Called Pushakara?
As per the mythologies and ancient Hindu scripts of Vedas and other most trusted sources, it was enunciated that presiding deity of all the rivers the son of Lord Varuna is the Pushkara. The legend has it that, once Pushkara prayed Lord Brahma and asked Him for a boon to live in the sacred waters (emanated from the foot of Primordial Lord Sri Maha Vishnu) of His Kamandalam with the intention of providing purity to all the Theerthas (Rivers).
Looking at the selfless desire expressed by Pushkara, Lord Brahma granted him the boon to live in the waters of His Kamandalam. Later, Pushkara also performed penance and acquired the Jala Tattva Siddhi from Lord Shiva as a boon. By virtue of the boons acquired from Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva, Pushkara became the King of all Theerthas and was regarded as the Theerthapalaka.
Pushkara and Brihaspathi (Jupiter)'s Penance
The Devaguru Brihaspathi (Jupiter) too exercised penance and pleased Lord Brahma at the tome when Pushkara acquired the boons from the lord. Being impressed with the eternal sacredness of both Pushkara, Brihaspathi Lord Brahma insisted Pushkara to be with Jupiter permanently while denied of doing so.
Witnessing the complexity of the situation Lord Brahma resolved the situation by asking Pushkara to be associated with Brihaspathi (Jupiter) for 12 days in the beginning and 12 days at the end of his sojourn in a particular raasi (house) in the zodiac, the transit of which generally happens once in a year. Since then twelve sacred rivers have been keyed out named out where Pushkara enters each River once in twelve years coinciding with the transit period of Jupiter in twelve zodiac signs.

Eminence and Significance Godavari Pushkaralu

This time of their entry into a particular river is considered as highly sacred and celestial that has the power to diminish the ghastly and dreadful sins committed.
Pushkara Vidhi
Having a bath during the Pushkara of a river would help to cleanse the inner selves, wash out the evil tendencies and open up a path for a righteous living. Brahma Muhurtham (after 3.45 AM in the morning - before sunrise) is considered to be the ideal time to take bath in the Pushkara river. Devotees are suggested to pray and give Arghya to the concerned Pushkara Theertha (River), Theertha Raja (Pushkara), Brihaspathi, Lord Vishnu, celestial deities, sages and the Sun God after the Pushkara Snana (bath).
An individual who has a darshan, has a bath, touches the Pushkara waters, drinks the sacred river water is considered to be highly meritorious and his soul cleaned from all sins. Pushakara of a any particular river is considered to be the most sacred time to perform rites to forefathers on the banks of Pushkara River that will help them attain salvation as per the Hindu Mythology.
Hindu religion prophesiers have stated some principles and customs to be followed during the Pushkara which are called as Pushkara Vidhi. Some of the most and must perform Pushkara Vidhi are Pushkara Snana (taking bath), Pushkara Vaasa (staying), Pushkara Darshana, Siro Mundana (tonsuring of head), Fasting, Pushkara Pithru Karma, and Pushkara Dana (charity).
Pushkara – Pithru Karma
Pushskara is coneived to be the auspicious time for Pithru Yagna like performing Pithru Shraaddha, Tharpana have been prescribed to do away with from Pithru Runa. It is widely believed and said that that Pithrus (fore-fathers) will descend on Earth during Pushkara days and will reside on the banks of Pushkara River longing for their off-spring to perform Pithru Shraaddha. This has been in vogue since time immemorial and even Avathara Purushas like Sri Ramachandra (Lord Sri Rama), Lord Parashurama are said to have performed Pithru karma. Performing Pushkara shraaddha, one will be bestowed with blessings from fore-fathers, peace and prosperity to the family.
Pushkara Dana (Charity)
Devotees who wish to give charity (Dana) during the Pushakara are advised to Brahmins in the form of Dasa Dana (10 in number) or Shodasa Dana (16 in number). As per the prophesier and Hindu mythologies some of the charities prescribed are as follows,
